In order to help stop the spreading of COVID-19, health officials across the world are recommending you practice social distancing. This involves taking steps to limit the number of people you come into close contact with. This will help to limit the spread of COVID-19 in your community and across the country.
Social distancing doesn’t ban you from going outside completely. Most public health officials are stating you can still go for a walk outdoors, get groceries and pick up essentials like prescription medications. Please check with your local health authorities to see their public statements, guidelines and restrictions for social distancing. In general, be sure to avoid crowds and maintain the recommended distance between yourself and others.
While this may sound challenging and boring, especially if you’re particularly social, doing your part to distance yourself can help slow down the spread of this virus. To help you get through the next few weeks of social distancing, or self-quarantine, here’s what we suggest:
1. Limit News Exposure
Staying informed is important, but it may cause unnecessary stress and worry if you’re glued to the news all day. Limit how often you check social media or the news channel if you start to feel overwhelmed. It’s okay to put your mind at ease by focusing on work, hobbies, or entertainment, instead of just the news.
2. Go for a Walk
As mentioned, you don’t have to stay cooped up inside all day every day. If you have a backyard, head out there for some fresh air each day. Or, go for a walk around your neighborhood. The fresh air is good for you and physical activity is beneficial too. Just be cautious of how close you get to others. Maintain three to six feet between others to properly distance yourself.
3. Video Calls
As social creatures, it’s important to stay connected. Despite staying in and avoiding social gatherings, you can still stay in touch with loved ones. Set up daily video calls with friends and family you can’t see in person. This will give you something to look forward to, just like normal social events do.
4. Time to Relax
If your household is full, you may start to feel a bit cramped with everyone in the same space. That’s why it’s important to make time for a relaxing activity each day like meditation that’s just for you. If meditation isn’t your thing, go for a solo walk, take a hot bath, go lay down on your bed, or find a quiet corner to read for a bit. This can be especially helpful if you require alone time to recharge.
5. Learn Something New
Is there something you’ve been putting off because you never had the time to start? Well, now you have the time! Many organizations are offering virtual classes for everything from health and wellness, yoga, business, and more. Or, maybe it’s time to get started on that home project you’ve been wanting to work on. Starting a new activity can help fill your time and give you a sense of accomplishment once you’re done.
