Since 1976, every US president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Around the world, other countries including Canada and the UK now also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
Black History Month’s 2022 Theme Is “Black Health and Wellness”This year, the theme of Black History Month celebrates the contributions that Black people have made to support the health and well-being of Black communities.
With a particular focus on preventative care, body positivity, physical exercise, mental health, nutrition, and gardening, this year’s Black History Month shines a light on the leaders who advocate for equality and empowerment in the wellness space.1
Amidst the continuing shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, as black communities continue to be disproportionately affected by this health crisis,2 it’s an important time to emphasize Black health.
As we shine a light on the interconnected systemic inequalities that Black communities continue to face, we also celebrate the incredible work that Black leaders are doing to support mental, physical and spiritual wellness.
In celebrating the 2022 Black History Month theme of Health & Wellness, here are 5 Black creators who use their platform to support, uplift and inspire their communities through wellness and self-care.
Jessica In The Kitchen
An award-winning photographer and videographer, Jessica is a vegan food blogger who advocates for easy, achievable, and health-conscious plant-based recipes. Her food content is mouth-watering — it’s impossible not to get hungry when you’re scrolling through her Instagram.
Jessica shares recipes weekly, and she has over 600 recipes on her website Jessica in the Kitchen for you to try out.
Latoya Shauntay Snell
Brooklyn-based trained chef Latoya Shauntay Snell is a body-positive athlete with a love for running and biking. She’s grown a community of passionate followers on Instagram, and advocates for health at all sizes and inclusivity within the fitness industry.
Her blog Running Fat Chef documents her culinary and fitness adventures. She shares her experiences with marathons, ultras and training, while also getting real about her journey towards self-love.
Yoga teacher, wellness influencer, sound bath healer and plant-based foodie, Phyllicia Bonanno is on a mission to inspire accessible health and well-being in every individual.

Dr Jess is a board-certified Psychologist, writer and content creator. She’s recognized by medical societies, mental health and government organizations for the work she does for mental health in the Black community.
