A DIY Skin Serum That Won’t Clog Your Pores

There’s no shortage of beauty oils and skin serums out there, as more and more are embracing the clean and natural beauty movement. While buying organic oils are a health-conscious choice, not all oils are created equal and may not all work with your specific skin type. Coconut oil, for example, has definitely had its moment (seriously, what can’t you use coconut oil for?!), but it’s highly comedogenic, which means it can clog pores. As a result, using coconut oil on your face could leave your skin worse off. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, it may be best to leave your coconut oil in the kitchen.

But that doesn’t mean you need to fear all beauty oils. In fact, facial oils are a great way to help trap moisture in your skin, so that you don’t end up looking like a shriveled up old prune. You just have to choose oils that are non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog your pores. Among the oils that won’t clog your pores are three of our favorites — jojoba oil, argan oil, and rosehip seed oil.

jojoba oil

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil (pronounced ho-ho-bah) is a unique beauty oil — it’s actually a liquid wax, pressed from the seeds of the plant Simmondsia chinensis. It closely resembles your own skin’s sebum, making it moisturizing for your skin, but not excessively oily! It’s popular in both skincare and beauty products as a moisturizing agent.

argan oil

Argan Oil

We mostly think of argan oil as a luxury hair oil for long locks to smooth frizz and boost shine. But this non-comedogenic oil is also well suited as a facial oil. Argan is super nourishing but lightweight, so it’s easily absorbed into your skin leaving a light and dewy glow.

rosehip seed oil

Rosehip Seed Oil

If the song If I Could Turn Back Time comes to mind when examining your skin, then you need to try rosehip seed oil. Shown to help improve the texture and quality of your skin, and help reduce the appearance of scars and photo-aged skin with consistent use over time, it’s a rejuvenating oil your face will love. Apply rosehip seed oil daily for best results.

Ready to work these oils into your daily beauty routine? Try this DIY Skin Serum recipe to combine ALL THREE of these oils into one skin-loving formula:

You’ll need:

3 tbsp jojoba oil

1.5 tbsp argan oil

2 tsp rosehip seed oil

2 oz. dark amber glass dropper bottle

Directions:

  1. Pour the jojoba, argan, and rosehip seed oils into the dropper bottle.
  2. Cap the bottle and give it a good shake.
  3. To use: Cleanse your face as usual, spray on your favorite toner or facial mist, then gently massage a ¼ to ½ dropper of serum onto your face and neck.

Don’t shy away from beauty oils just because you have oily or reactive skin! Just be sure to do a patch test when trying new products. Choose oils that won’t clog your pores, like jojoba, argan, and rosehip oil for clean skincare that won’t leave an oily mess or thick residue.
