Social Distance & Still Have Fun With These 6 Summer Activities

Summer is officially here which usually means pool parties and backyard BBQs. But with COVID-19 outbreaks still a reality for many cities across the country, this summer may be a bit different. If you’re located near a hotspot, you’re likely trying to figure out how to enjoy your summer while still following the rules.

Your health and safety should always be a priority, no matter what. But the summer season brings nice weather and spare time. Kids are out of school and looking to you for fun ideas. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Here are six activities to kick off the summer season, while still following social distancing guidelines:

1. Drive-In Movies

Drive-in theaters are picking up in popularity as you can safely go to the movies without coming into close contact with others. Staying in your car helps you keep your distance while still enjoying a night out. This is a super cute retro date night idea to do with your significant other, or a fun family outing that your kids will love! Just be sure to stay in your car and follow all safety measures that have been put in place.

2. Berry Picking

Check with your local farms to see if berry picking is open. If organized by appointment only and safety guidelines have been put in place, you can absolutely pick berries while maintaining a safe distance from others. Enjoying fresh fruit is always a summer favorite and this is a fun activity that kids and adults alike will enjoy. And the fun doesn’t stop with the picking! Once you take your harvest home, you can bake, freeze, and eat your bountiful berries to your heart's content.

3. Gardening

Turn your backyard into a summer oasis by planting flowers in pots, flower beds, or windowsill planters around your house. Not only will the finished product look beautiful, but gardening is a fun hobby that counts as physical activity! When you can’t travel or go out and about, transform your living space into a place you love. Flowers can brighten up your home and definitely give off a summer vibe. And if you want to involve the whole family, consider planting a small vegetable garden (if you have the space). Kids will love the idea of growing food and may become more interested in cooking, too.

4. Boating

Looking to get outside but want to steer clear of others? Hop into a boat for a day on the water! Whether you have a sail, motor, or simply a paddle, boating is a fun outdoor activity to soak up the sun and get some fresh air. Check with your local authorities to make sure boating is open in your area before heading out. Remember your boater’s license, life jacket, and sunscreen — safety first!

5. Biking

If you don’t have access to water, or would just prefer to stay on land, hop on a bike for the outdoor activity. Solo or with a friend, you can definitely keep your distance on wheels. Make it an invigorating workout with hills and climbs, or an easy ride at a leisurely pace. This is a fun activity you can do with your kids and is a great way to explore new neighborhoods.

6. Camping

If you love the great outdoors then you should be happy to hear that most National and State parks are open for camping! Pack up your tent and head for the hills, where space is vast and people are sparse. You’ll enjoy your time outdoors without worrying about people-dodging every which way. The further you go into the country, the better! Whether you go for a day hike or book a campsite for a week, be sure to tell someone where you’re headed and for how long.

COVID-19 has officially taken over 2020, but that doesn’t mean summer is ruined. Consider these fun activities for you and your family that still allow you to socially distance yourselves from others. Just be sure to check with your local government to see what’s open, what’s allowed, and what safety measures you need to take. If that means wear a mask...WEAR A MASK! It’s as simple as that. Health & safety should always be a priority this summer season. Stay safe!
